5 tips to stay fit this Christmas
It's the most wonderful time of the year. But it’s also one of the hardest times to stay fit and healthy. A busier social life, richer foods, parties, cocktails, and less active time, in general, can put a pause, or even a decline, on your fitness goals.
There are no rules to anything you do on vacation. If you feel like it, go ahead and enjoy the festivities. Eat, drink and be merry, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you're committed to staying in shape this Christmas, we have some practical solutions
1 – Stay as active as possible
If you can still go to the gym to stay fit over Christmas, do it, even if your sessions are shorter or less intense than usual. Maintaining consistency is the best way for you to maintain your muscular structure and get closer to your goals. If you can't make it to the gym, simply walking more, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or adding a quick 10-minute morning workout to your daily routine can make a world of difference .
2 – Go outside with your loved ones
Time spent with friends and family doesn’t have to be limited indoors. This holiday season gives you more time to enjoy physical activities with your loved ones like swimming or hiking, or sports games, whether it's golf or soccer. Even a snowball fight in the backyard can burn calories! And since exercise can help reduce stress, it's the perfect way to offset those Christmas shopping headaches, while keeping your fitness levels high.
3 – Drink lots of water (and limit alcohol)
The importance of hydration to staying fit cannot be underestimated. But even when you're not doing intense workouts in the gym, drinking plenty of water helps manage your weight, stay more resilient, lubricate joints and rejuvenate muscles. If you're worried about overindulging in Christmas sweets, drink a large glass of water before a meal. Studies show that this helped participants under controlled conditions feel less hungry. During this time, moderate your alcohol consumption. Our goal is certainly not to prevent you from enjoying a mulled wine, but be sure to limit the quantity, because alcohol only adds more calories to those you have already eaten.
4 – Eat wisely
Enjoying food at Christmas time is important. It's so rewarding to treat ourselves to foods that we don't necessarily eat all year round (you can't refuse the moment of the log). But, as with everything, moderation is key if you really want to stay on track with your fitness goals. Excess can lead to weight gain, especially if physical activity is reduced during this time. Try to stick to your normal diet as much as possible. For example, don't skip breakfast just to make up for the calories you plan to consume later, this will only lead to counterproductive results.
5 – Have fun without guilt
Stress hormones alone can lead to weight gain, so don't be too hard on yourself this holiday season. If you spend a lot of time training, the most beneficial part of taking time out from your workout is that your body can recover properly. After all, it is the recovery process that allows your body to work, repair, restore and strengthen. By taking some time off over Christmas, you'll feel better prepared to challenge yourself back in the gym.
